First Wednesday Devotion
Joseph promises “A torrent of graces.”
St. Joseph appeared to a young Catholic layman, Edson Glauber, in Itapiranga, Brazil from 1994-1998. The extraordinary manner of this apparition is that St. Joseph appeared along with Mary and Jesus. The only other time in history this happened was at the final apparition of Fatima in October 1917, but at that time Joseph did not speak.
Joseph’s apparitions at Itapiranga are especially noted for his warnings to the world about sin and impending judgment as well as his gift of the First Wednesday devotion, clearly intended as a companion of the traditional First Friday and First Saturday devotions.
In the apparition on the first Wednesday of March 1998, St. Joseph gave us the First Wednesday devotion and promised a “torrent of graces” to all who follow it. Here are his exact words:
“On every first Wednesday of the month, my Chaste Heart pours numerous graces on all who rely on my intercession. On these Wednesdays, men will not receive a shower of simple graces, but very strong torrents of extraordinary graces! I will share them with those who honor me and rely on me, all the blessings, all the virtues, and all the love I received from my Divine Son Jesus and my spouse the Blessed Virgin Mary while still living in this world and all the graces that I continue to receive in the glory of paradise.”
“I promise to intercede before him for those who come to me, honoring this Heart of mine. I will give them the graces to be able to resolve the most difficult problems and urgent necessities, that to the eyes of man seem impossible, but that, through my intercession to God, will be possible. I grant the graces of my Heart to all sinners so they may convert.”
“On every first Wednesday of the month, my Chaste Heart pours numerous graces on all who rely on my intercession. On these Wednesdays, men will not receive a shower of simple graces, but very strong torrents of extraordinary graces!”

The Wednesday Sacrifice
In the theological mindset of the Church, certain days of the week have symbolic significance.
Sunday, of course, is the Lord’s Day because of His Resurrection. Saturdays have always been especially devoted the Blessed Virgin Mary due to her mourning the death of her Son on Holy Saturday. Thursdays have a special connection to the holy priesthood because of the institution of the priesthood on Holy Thursday.
And Wednesdays are devoted to St. Joseph. Why?
Carmelite priest, Fr. Nicholas Blackwell, made an interesting observation about the Church’s devotion to Joseph on Wednesdays. He said, “Wednesday is like a bridge from one part of the week to another. It’s true that St. Joseph is like a bridge for us, too — a bridge between the Old and New Testaments.”
Joseph is also a bridge to the Holy Family for us.
Go To Joseph wants to reinvigorate the Wednesday devotion to Joseph by asking our viewers to make sacrifices on Wednesdays in union with the sacrificial life of St. Joseph.
Join us in the Wednesday Sacrifice!
Here’s how it works.
Dedicate every Wednesday to offering some sort of sacrifice to and with Saint Joseph for the sake of all the intentions we bring to him – the needs of society, the Church, our families and souls.
What sacrifice you choose to make is entirely up to you, but here are a few suggestions that come from the traditional practices of the Church (as well as some creative common sense!):
Traditional
- Prayer
- Almsgiving
- Fasting
Vocational
- Extra fidelity to spouse, family, and one’s natural responsibilities
- Going the extra mile to nurture, teach, spend time with, and/or encourage the children under your care
- Extra effort to set an example for others or exercise virtue in the performance of our duties.
Charitable
- A conscious choice, an extra effort, to reach out to someone who is suffering
- Donations to charity from your substance, not just your want.
- Giving of time and talent to others in a sacrificial way.
Spontaneous
- Responding to the inconvenient requests of others with kindness
- Patiently enduring the lack of professionalism or failings of others without acting rashly
- Offering a kind word when you would rather lash out.
Of course, there are many opportunities every day to offer sacrifices, but these are some suggestions for the Wednesday sacrifice.
The important thing is that we consciously choose and offer these sacrifices to Joseph on Wednesdays as our way to “go to him” for the needs of the world.
Joseph will honor and bless every sacrifice we offer to him!
